When editing your website, I can undertake the tasks identified for technical copy-editing. In addition I can, among other things, create sentences and paragraphs that are shorter than the equivalent printed text and insert concise, factual subheadings every two or three paragraphs to make your content web friendly.
I can also write concise descriptive headings that can be found by a search engine, and rewrite sentences so that the target (internal or external) of a linked word or phrase is clear.
I can additionally check that all links work and advise on the splitting of content across additional linked pages to facilitate direct access to those pages from elsewhere on the site and from search engines.
I am able to use content management systems (CMS) to edit and upload text, and to create links and headings of different weights.
For a fuller description of what you can expect me to do when editing your website, please consult section 5.5 of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders’ code of practice.
In addition to those tasks identified in proofreading, when proofreading your website I can, among other things, ensure that any navigational controls work and that the text on them is consistent with that on the site map and with page titles and/or headings; download and proofread multimedia files; and ensure that ‘alt’, ‘title’ and ‘longdesc’ tags are correct and editorially consistent.
I can also, if you have one and allow access, proofread using your content management system (CMS) and check the effects of any changes on the appearance of each web page.
